For direct printing on a carton, the minimum recommended symbol size is 62.5% of its nominal size, which corresponds to an X-dimension of 0.635 mm.
The bearer bar is required for direct printing on cartons and is defined as 4.8 mm. Otherwise, it may be omitted entirely, or only its two horizontal sections may be printed; these may also extend beyond the quiet zones. In the latter case, the thickness of the two horizontal sections of the bearer bar is defined as twice the X-dimension.
The character size and the typefaces used to display the characters in human-readable text are not defined by the specifications and may be printed anywhere around the symbol, provided that the quiet zones are not infringed.
